As America Celebrates 250 Years, Don't Forget to Honor Our Flag
How to Properly Retire your American Flag

As communities across the nation prepare to celebrate America's 250th birthday, many families are proudly displaying the Stars and Stripes outside their homes, businesses, and at community events. It's a wonderful reminder of the values that unite us—freedom, sacrifice, and patriotism.
With so many new American flags being purchased this year, it's also a good time to remember what to do when an older flag has become worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair.
The U.S. Flag Code states that when an American flag is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be retired in a dignified and respectful manner.
The Easiest Way to Retire a Flag

Retiring a Flag Yourself
If you choose to retire a flag yourself, the traditional method is to:
Fold the flag into the customary triangular shape.
Burn it respectfully in a safe setting.
Observe the ceremony with a salute, the Pledge of Allegiance, or a moment of silence.
Bury the ashes once the flag has been completely consumed.
Keep in mind that many modern American flags are made from nylon or polyester, which can release harmful fumes when burned. For that reason, using one of the local collection sites is often the safest and most practical option.
A Small Act of Respect
As we commemorate 250 years of American independence, let's remember that our flag represents the generations of Americans who have defended our freedoms and the ideals that continue to inspire our nation.
If you have an old flag tucked away in a closet or garage, consider taking a few moments to retire it properly. It's a simple gesture that honors our country's history and the men and women who have served under the Stars and Stripes.
Happy Independence Day, and thank you for helping keep this great American tradition alive. 🇺🇸
