Stay Safe: Protect Yourself from Scammers in Upland

Scammers are on the rise, and Upland Police have noticed an increase in fraudulent schemes—especially targeting our elderly community. Protect yourself and your loved ones by staying informed and guarding your hard-earned money against these deceptive tactics.

Five Essential Tips to Avoid Scams

🔹 Government & Law Enforcement Scams: No legitimate law enforcement agency or government office will ever demand payment for bail, warrants, or traffic tickets using gift cards, cryptocurrency, or online payment platforms. If someone claims otherwise, it’s a scam!

🔹 Suspicious Links & Emails: Never click on unverified links sent via email or text, especially from unknown sources. These could lead to phishing attacks designed to steal your personal and financial information.

🔹 Lottery & Investment Scams: Be cautious of investment schemes, lottery winnings, or sweepstakes offers that require upfront payments for taxes or fees before you can claim your "prize." If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

🔹 Fake Prize Notifications: Legitimate companies, like Publishers Clearing House, will never call, email, or message you about winning a prize. If someone contacts you claiming you’ve won but asks for money first, it’s a scam.

🔹 Selling Online? Be Cautious! If you’re selling items on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or similar platforms, avoid accepting checks as payment. Fake or fraudulent checks can take days to bounce—leaving you without your item and out of money.

Think You’ve Been Scammed? Act Fast!

If you or someone you know has fallen victim to fraud, report it immediately to the Upland Police Department. Staying alert and informed is the best way to fight back against scammers and protect our community!
